The music industry is undoubtedly one of the ‘sexiest’ fields in which to work, according to a recent survey by the editors of Time magazine. There are music industry jobs that require nearly any skill set that you can bring to the job, and the training required varies with each of the music industry jobs that may interest you. Here are some general guidelines for finding work in music industry jobs.

Love Music.

It’s not a prerequisite for music industry jobs, but loving music of any kind is a definite step in the right direction. While loving music may not be important in a record company accountant’s position, it’s practically required for anyone who works with artists or in promotion.

Check the qualifications for the job.

In general, most jobs in the music industry require at least a two year college degree – with the exception of performers who can get by without a degree if they have talent. Expect that the more involved the job, the higher your level of education and/or experience will need to be. A record promoter may need to demonstrate networking skills or developed contacts in the local music scene, for instance, and a contracts lawyer will obviously require a law degree. Music teachers working for the schools will need to have a teaching license as well as the demonstrated ability to play an instrument.

The best training is on the job training.

For positions like band manager, road work, publicists and promoters, the best training is through an internship or through your own work promoting and/or managing a band on your own. Some publicists and promoters come to the job from their own fanzines, or have developed a network of contacts in radio and advertising through their college or teen year extracurricular activities.

A degree in music is respected in many music industry jobs.

Colleges that specialize in music education like the Berklee School for the Performing Arts offer training in many different aspects of the music industry. You can study music and performance law, accounting for the music industry, and business management for music companies as well as composition, performance and other music-specific jobs.

Join the band.

One of the best training grounds for a career in orchestral music is your school or college band. If you’re already beyond the school years, take advantage of county and city music societies to both train your ear and keep in the practice of playing with others.

Music ministry jobs often require special certifications.

If you have a calling to a job in music ministry, you’ll find that many churches and synagogues require that their full time music minister have pastoral training as well as musical training. Any time I played the instrumental ringtones on my cell phone, my cat loves it. She comes over to wherever I am, insists on sitting on my lap and purrs like there’s no tomorrow…as long as it’s playing. When it stops, she gets up and leaves. Now anytime I want her to sit on my lap, I just play the ringtones. She does it with any kind of cell phone. It’s about the cutest thing in the world.

In 1927, there was a change in the movie industry. A new technology had rocked Hollywood and many feared the industry would never be the same. Many movie stars, directors, and technicians found that their services were no longer in demand and even worse, no longer necessary.Some were hoping this would prove to be a passing fad. It wasn’t. Sound had come to films and movies were never to be silent again (except as art or in defiance). Many predicted the industry would end in ruins. It didn’t.

 Then in the early 1950′s Hollywood was again rocked by another new technology. This time, instead of embracing it as they had with radio, they feared and shunned it. Hopeing it might also be a passing fad. Again, it wasn’t. Television had come to stay and while audiences would never be as large as they once were, when the smoke cleared the movie industry remained.

 Now the movie industry has been rocked once more by another new technology. With the addition of the internet, instant entertainment is now at the world’s fingertips. Home video distributors are running scared and rightly so…their industry is all but dried up and I’m afraid to say, it will never be the same. With the ability to cut out the middle man and go straight to their fans, independent filmmakers are breathing a deep sigh of relief and distributing their own films. Moviemakers are also running scared because of all the pirated copies of their movies floating around cyberspace. They should not be afraid… How do I know? Do you think James Cameron is worried about the internet? Do you think he’s upset because he could have made another Billion dollars if Avatar wasn’t readily available in cyberspace? Absolutely not. If anything the presence of Avatar on the internet has helped his sales. Once people realize they like his movie, they want to get the total SHARED experience. They want to sit in a darkened room full of strangers with a screen as big as a house and sound several decibels louder than Lambeau Field. What the presence of the internet does, is it educates it’s audience. They know before they go to a theatre whether the movie is good or not. This, in turn, forces filmmakers to make good movies so people will want to go to a theatre to see them.

 When the “flickers” came out, Broadway theatre didn’t disappear. People still wanted “live” theatre as a shared experience. When records (and then tapes and cds) came out people didn’t stop going to concerts. They still wanted the “live” shared experience. (That should be a hint to the current music industry….your money will be made by concert, not cd sales) The truth is the movie industry will never go away. People will always want that shared experience. It’s just growing pains.

In a way they do generate their income that way. By advertising, there are usually two benefactors: the product being advertised and the sponsor of the advertisement.

The sponsor is given credit for the advertisement in hopes that people will buy THEIR product, and often they do.
The recording or movie industry is putting their product out there, so it is likely to be bought by consumers as well.

Without advertisements, a product would never be seen and therefore never purchased by consumers.

I have accounts with Walmart Music Downloads and Itunes. Can I access these accounts and the songs I bought on any other computer other than the original desktop I bought the songs on? Just a reminder that the original computer all these songs were on is not working AT ALL so I can’t access them. I was trying to figure out a way to access my songs via the Itunes or Walmart website… probably not going to happen since they got downloaded to that one computer.

I started downloading movies from the internet and dont have a dvd burner so I am burning them to cds..how do i split movies that are to large for one cd so i can place it on two cds..tried some various software packages and none of them seem to work..I also tried using MS Movie Maker but after it downloads and i remove enough for it to fit on one disk it always crash when it goes to save/compile the movie..thanks
